What is the point of having a gateway HDMI receiver?

What is the advantage of a receiver HDMI pass through and not become the video that you enter? Most have 2 HDMI inputs. I understand that if your TV has an HDMI input, then its usefulness. But if the TV has 2 inputs, and put everything through the receiver, you will need 3 HDMI cables. Obviously, if the receiver can decode the audio via HDMI, great, but most do not yet. I know that if you have 2 HDMI sources, you are throwing away one less entry in a tv, and not have to change the TV and receiver, but the only advantage? Anything I'm missing? Please enlighten me.

The idea is that if you have more than one piece of equipment that includes an HDMI connection, but your HDTV has only one in the back. You could funnel all equipment capable of HDMI into the receiver, then run an HDMI cable to your TV. This works for any video cable that you have, too.
